1860 Munich Has the Most Away Fans; Here Are RWE and MSV

Despite the team’s struggles on the field, the fans of TSV 1860 Munich remain steadfast. No other third-division team has more away fans on average.

On the field, the fans of TSV 1860 Munich have had little to celebrate so far in the current third-division season. The Lions are falling far short of their high expectations, sitting in 14th place after 14 matchdays and having already made a coaching change.

But despite the on-field struggles, support in the stands remains strong. According to the website “diefalsche9,” no club in the 3rd Division has more away fans than the traditional club from Munich-Giesing. An average of 2,314 supporters travel to the Lions’ away games—despite the team’s poor away record of just four points from seven matches.

Until the last matchday, FC Hansa Rostock still led the away fan ranking, but has now been narrowly overtaken by 1860. An average of 2,293 fans attend the Hanseatic club’s away games. In terms of away section occupancy, however, FC Hansa (94 percent) leads the way ahead of the Munich Lions (83 percent).

With an average of 1,789 away fans, Rot-Weiss Essen rounds out the top three. RWE set its season high so far at the end of October in the derby against MSV Duisburg (1-1), when the club was supported by 4,400 fans. MSV ranks fourth in the away fan table (1,510), with Alemannia Aachen close behind in fifth place (1,443).

Four other clubs are accompanied by an average of four-digit numbers of fans to their away games: VfL Osnabrück (1,393), SV Waldhof Mannheim (1,287), 1. FC Saarbrücken (1,186), and Energie Cottbus (1,171).

On the other hand, however, there are also three clubs that can only boast double-digit away fan numbers. Only 66 supporters travel on average to SC Verl’s away matches. The situation is even worse for the promoted teams TSV Havelse (43) and TSG Hoffenheim II (32). The Kraichgau-based team thus brings up the rear of the league.
