Regensburg Responds to Aachen’s Point; First Team to Be Relegated Becomes Clear

In the 3rd Division, the first team to be relegated is becoming increasingly clear, while Jahn Regensburg celebrates an important victory at the bottom of the table.

Two teams have been relegated from the 2nd Division to the 3rd Division—and both could be sent straight down to the Regional League. Both SSV Jahn Regensburg and SSV Ulm 1846 are in acute relegation trouble.

From Regensburg’s perspective, it was clear that they had to win Saturday’s late game at 1. FC Schweinfurt 05. The “Schnüdel” are languishing at the bottom of the table and can likely only be saved by a miracle.

Jahn made their presence felt after just four minutes. Midfielder Benedikt Saller played a pass to Sebastian Stolze, who, however, failed to shoot on goal from a running start.

Noel Eichinger did better after eleven minutes. The Regensburg player latched onto a precise through ball from Benedikt Bauer and slotted the ball low into the right corner to make it 1-0 for Jahn.

Points Table

A fair result, especially since Regensburg could have extended their lead as early as the 17th minute. Adrian Fein found Saller with a corner kick, but he failed to put either his header or his follow-up shot past Schnüdel.

All in all, Regensburg deserved the lead. After 39 minutes, center forward Eric Hottmann looked set to extend it, but Johannes Geis made a last-second block for Schweinfurt. So the teams went into halftime with Jahn leading 1-0.

In the second half, the first real excitement didn’t come until the 63rd minute—but it was a big one. Felix Strauss had actually been shown a yellow card for a foul, but then said something to referee Daniel Bartnitzki that didn’t sit well with him at all. As a result, the Regensburg player was sent off with a red card.

But Schweinfurt failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage. Instead, Regensburg had chances to seal the match but couldn’t convert them. And in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Schweinfurt nearly equalized. However, Manuel Wintzheimer was denied by a quick-reacting Jahn goalkeeper, Felix Gebhardt.

In the end, it remained an important 1-0 away win for Jahn, which meant that Alemannia Aachen—who had briefly moved ahead—slipped back behind Regensburg. For Schweinfurt, however, who remain in last place with nine points, there is likely no hope left. It looks like a direct return to the Bavarian Regional League is on the horizon.
