VfL Osnabrück is turning up the heat on the competition and taking the lead. VfL defeated 1. FC Saarbrücken 1-0.
The match started well behind schedule. To allow the 1,200 traveling away fans to show their support, kickoff was postponed by 30 minutes.
There was a lot at stake for both teams. Crisis-stricken 1. FC Saarbrücken had been waiting for a win for 14 games, while VfL Osnabrück can dream of promotion. For Saarbrücken, the wait continues, and Osnabrück can keep dreaming: The visitors won 1-0 at Ludwigspark.
The first chance came immediately after kickoff for the home team: Florian Pick sent the ball over the VfL goal in the first minute. The first set piece in the 11th minute then led directly to the opening goal. Osnabrück, previously completely unremarkable, promptly converted Lars Kehl’s first corner through the onrushing Niklas Wiemann, who sent the ball over the line with his thigh.
Lukas Jonsson subsequently preserved the lead for VfL—Dominic Baumann was denied by the Osnabrück goalkeeper (23′). Saarbrücken pressed for the equalizer but couldn’t convert their chances into goals. Pick missed from distance in the 27th minute. The fact that FCS went into halftime trailing was down to their own failure to capitalize on chances: After a corner, Robin Bormuth missed from point-blank range at the far post (38′). And so they did indeed head into the locker room trailing 0-1.

Once again, the Saarland side came back onto the field as the dominant team. But the visitors also fought their way back into the game, which was now becoming increasingly open. Numerous Saarbrücken set pieces created danger but failed to result in a goal. In the closing stages, it was particularly substitute Patrick Schmidt who squandered numerous good chances. And so the final score was 1-0 for VfL Osnabrück, who didn’t exactly deserve the win but somehow managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
Osnabrück now occupies the relegation spot for the time being, while Saarbrücken continues to wait for three points and finds itself in acute danger of relegation.
