Captain on a trip to the stands and a big win – “We’re not afraid of anything”

Alexander Hahn watched MSV Duisburg’s home win against SC Verl from the fan section at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena. For him, it was a special experience.

After the 0-1 loss in Ulm, Alexander Hahn was still visibly upset. At the Donaustadion, the center back had picked up his fifth yellow card and had to watch the big match against SC Verl from the stands a week later.

Ben Schlicke took his place in MSV Duisburg’s back four. But things went well even without him. The Meiderich-based team won 4-2 and remain a force at home in the 3rd Division.

Instead of taking a seat in the main stands, the 33-year-old mingled with the active fans behind the goal in the North Stand—not far from the lead singer’s podium. As early as 45 minutes before kickoff, the fans had gathered en masse in the stadium to get in the mood for the clash with arguably the league’s strongest opponent.

“It was unbelievable. I was right in the thick of it and had a blast. Hats off to what those guys pull off. I’ve lost my voice,” the captain told “MagentaSport” during halftime.

Without their driving force, Duisburg proved extremely effective, especially in the first half. A brace from Lex-Tyger Lobinger, along with goals from Dennis Borkowski and birthday boy Patrick Sussek (26), sealed the deal.

Especially after winning the ball high up in the opponent’s half, the Meiderich side switched play quickly and purposefully. Jan-Simon Symalla, returning to the starting lineup, brought a lot of pace to the game. Defensively, MSV ultimately withstood Verler’s increasing offensive pressure.

“The 3rd Division is intense and characterized by a lot of physical battles. We handled them well,” Hahn praised after the match. With 43 points, the Zebras climbed back up to second place and are now two points ahead of SC Verl, which currently occupies the first non-promotion spot. They are just two points away from their stated season goal of avoiding relegation.

“With 45 points, you’re almost certain to stay in the 3rd League. But we want to win every game and we’re not afraid of anything,” the veteran made clear. On Saturday in Wiesbaden, the defender will return to the center of the defense.
