In a friendly match for FC Lugano, former national team player Kevin Behrens attacks a teammate and insults him. The club announces disciplinary action.
It’s the 72nd minute of Friday’s friendly match between FC Lugano and Viktoria Plzeň. Kevin Behrens, the Swiss team’s forward, appears to initiate the press and charges forward determinedly. The problem? The 34-year-old isn’t running toward an opponent—he’s running toward his own teammate!
Georgios Koutsias reacts in astonishment before Behrens shoves him to the ground and yells at him. “You little freak, be quiet,” he reportedly said, according to “Blick.” Another teammate steps in to calm the situation. Behrens is substituted immediately afterward. (Click here for the video).
What exactly prompted Behrens to act this way remains unclear. In any case, FC Lugano has announced that there will be consequences.
“FC Lugano unequivocally condemns the incident during the friendly match against FC Viktoria Plzeň involving Kevin Behrens and Georgios Koutsias, as well as the related events,” the club stated, adding: “The matter will be handled and resolved internally; the club will determine what disciplinary measures to take against the two players involved. No further statements will be issued on this matter, and no additional comments will be made.”
Incidentally, Pilsen won the friendly match—played in three 45-minute halves—4–2; Behrens even scored the equalizer to make it 1–1.
Former RWE player Behrens has caused a stir before
Behrens had already made negative headlines in September 2024 when he allegedly refused to sign a special rainbow-colored jersey belonging to his then-employer, VfL Wolfsburg, and made a homophobic remark.
The national team player (one international appearance), who was under contract with Rot-Weiss Essen during the first half of the 2015–2016 season, apologized to *SportBild* at the time.
“My off-the-cuff remarks were absolutely out of line. I’d like to apologize for that. The matter was discussed thoroughly internally, and I ask for your understanding that I do not wish to comment further on it,” he said at the time.
