RWE II Defeats League Leader—Efficiency Boosts Scoreboard

Rot-Weiss Essen II secured a victory against the leader of Bezirksliga 6. Vogelheimer SV lost 0–4.

Déjà vu for Rot-Weiss Essen’s second team. Just last week, RWE faced the leader of Bezirksliga 6 from the Lower Rhine—SV Burgaltendorf (3–3)—and squandered a 3–0 lead. Now, Vogelheimer SV was the new league leader and had to play at RWE. But this time, Essen’s second team didn’t let anything slip and won 4–0.

“I think you can sum it up simply: Efficiency won the day. When the scoreboard reads 0–4, you have to be careful not to make a fool of yourself,” Vogelheim coach Carsten Isenberg clarified. Because as crazy as it sounds, the 4–0 score was actually too lopsided for RWE in what was a fairly even match.

Joel Leon Beta scored the 1–0 goal after less than three minutes (3rd minute). But Rot-Weiss was by no means dominant. “In the opening phase, RWE was very aggressive and then scored the goal. We weren’t even on the field yet. But after the first ten minutes, we took control of the game—even without creating any truly decisive chances. After all, efficiency is also a quality, and our opponent had that today,” Isenberg explained.

“An early goal is always a blessing and a curse. Shortly after that, we had another great chance, but we’re not going to complain about taking the lead in a phase like that. It was unexpected, but it was good that we were able to take the lead,” said RWE II coach Stefan Lorenz, describing his view of the situation.

Rot-Weiss Essen extended their lead with a penalty kick by Burak Bahadir in the first half (32’) and went into halftime up 2–0.

Last week it was a 3–0 score—déjà vu? “Of course, that’s in the back of my mind; I had that fear, too. I thought, let’s see how Vogelheim comes out of the locker room—they’ll surely push forward a lot. But the VSV couldn’t match the pressure Burgaltendorf applied last week. Still, they’re one of the top teams; even they had to lose sometime,” Lorenz admitted.

Jan-Luca Geurtz (54th) and Joel Bema with his second (83rd) sealed the deal. It was certainly frustrating for the VSV, because there was definitely more to be had. “RWE was very efficient, got off to a good start, and scored on their first chance. From that point on, we were playing catch-up. It felt like Essen scored on every shot, but that’s no excuse. When you lose 0–4, you don’t deserve anything—especially not when you can’t get into the box and don’t defend consistently enough,” Isenberg explained after the match, as his Vogelheim team slipped to second place.
