In future, customers of the TV channel Sky will have to pay up to 9.99 euros more per month. Watching football will thus become even more expensive.

Football fans have long been accustomed to price increases, with the monthly subscription price rising again and again over the years. Most recently, the streaming services DAZN and Amazon Prime made a considerable jump in price.

DAZN shows, among other things, the Friday and Sunday matches of the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the Spanish Primera Division. Amazon Prime shows, among other things, the Tuesday top match of the Champions League. Now the pay channel Sky is also raising its prices. It shows the bulk of the Bundesliga, i.e. all Saturday matches, plus the 2nd division, all DFB Cup matches and all Premier League matches from England. It could now cost up to 9.99 euros more per month.

As the industry service DWDL.de reports, this will initially only affect existing customers whose initial one-year contract expires. The prices will rise up to 9.99 euros per month, but it depends on the respective programme packages subscribed to. According to DWDL and Sky, the increase of 9.99 euros would only affect five percent of users. On average, the increase is said to be less than five euros per month.

New customers will still be spared

Sky cited the following as the reason for the upcoming price increase: “We are investing in innovative products, services and high-quality programme content. To account for the resulting increased costs for programme licences and technical infrastructure, we are adjusting our prices,” a Sky spokesperson told DWDL. “We are aware that price increases are never welcome. That’s why we try to keep prices as low as possible while offering the content our customers love and the flexibility to choose the right package.”

For new customers, Sky is not initially turning the price screw. Current offers and discounts remain in place. Only after one contract year will these customers also have to adjust to higher prices.
