Under coach Christopher Pache, SG Wattenscheid 09 sits atop the Oberliga Westfalen standings, undefeated after 15 matchdays. Goalkeeper Joshua Mroß, who recently extended his contract, has been a key factor in the team’s outstanding season so far.
The 29-year-old Mroß transferred to Lohrheide last winter from league rival ASC 09 Dortmund. So far this season, the goalkeeper has kept six clean sheets and conceded only nine goals. He has thus played a major role in SGW’s winning streak.
But can Wattenscheid follow in the footsteps of Bayer Leverkusen during the 2023–24 Bundesliga season and remain undefeated until the very end?
“It’s not impossible,” Mroß explained after the 2–2 draw in the top match against Westfalia Rhynern on the last matchday. “But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. We still have some tough games ahead of us in the coming weeks, including the cup match against Gütersloh. We’ll do our best to ride this wave of success for as long as possible.”
Currently, SGW sits at the top of the table with 34 points, two points ahead of second-place SV Lippstadt. If things continue this way, nothing stands in the way of a return to Germany’s fourth-highest division. But what does Wattenscheid’s successful coach, Pache, have to say about a possible promotion to the Regionalliga West?
“We’re having a really, really awesome season so far. Right now, everything is just clicking at the club.”

“We’re athletes, and of course we’re always eager to move up,” the coach explained. “But it takes a lot to make that happen. As long as we can compete at the top, we’ll enjoy it. We’re having a really, really awesome season so far. Right now, everything is just clicking at the club.”
Before the season, the club set a goal of finishing in the top five of the league. Pache and his team plan to wait and see how far they’ll ultimately go.
“In the winter, once we’ve played every opponent, we can take stock and see where things are headed,” the coach revealed. “However, we’re taking a very relaxed approach to the situation and are simply happy to be at the top of the standings right now.”
This coming Saturday (November 22, 3:30 p.m.), SG Wattenscheid 09 will play at home against SV Schermbeck and has the chance to further extend its lead at the top of the standings.
