FC Wegberg-Beeck has been a part of the Regionalliga West on and off over the years. Now, the club’s main sponsor and managing director—who held both roles—is stepping down.
Anyone who thinks of the Regionalliga West and FC Wegberg-Beeck will almost immediately come up with the term “elevator club.” Time and again in the past, the Beeck team has bounced back and forth between the Regionalliga West and the Mittelrheinliga.
This season, it’s clear that promotion is no longer in the cards. Sitting in tenth place, FC Wegberg-Beeck trails league leader Bergisch Gladbach 09 by 14 points.
Main sponsor and managing director Werner Tellers is now drawing his conclusions. He will step down at the end of the current season and will continue to support FC Wegberg-Beeck on a small scale as a sponsor. “I’ll continue to oversee projects and sponsorship, but without the day-to-day responsibilities,” he told *kicker*.
His decision to step down had been in the works for some time: “It was an open secret that I would step down if we didn’t make it to the Regionalliga. The decision has been in the works for years.”
He continued: “The Regionalliga would have brought new momentum and opened up sponsorship opportunities. But without realistic athletic prospects, this Herculean effort is no longer justified.”

As managing director, he had also served as the “jack-of-all-trades,” Tellers continued: “In Wegberg, you’re not just a managing director. When toilets are clogged or tickets don’t fit, the phone rings at my desk. The structures aren’t professionalized, and that’s a constant burden.” That, too, was a reason for his resignation.
An extraordinary general meeting will be held on Friday, February 6, at which a new president and managing director will be elected. “If we can’t find a new board, the club will be deregistered the very next day,” Tellers explained.
In addition to his future role as a small sponsor, the 59-year-old also wants to remain connected to the club as a spectator. He hinted at this. “I want to come to the game, eat a sausage, watch the game, and drive home. I won’t be running the club from behind the scenes.”
