The transfer window closes on Monday. Rot-Weiss Essen could still make some moves, according to RWE board member Alexander Rang.

Rot-Weiss Essen faces SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the 3. Liga on Sunday evening. During halftime, RWE board member Alexander Rang answered questions from MagentaSport.

Rang was quite satisfied with the team’s performance in the first 45 minutes (1–0). Looking at the bigger picture, the board member was also able to send positive signals on the day of the club’s 119th anniversary.

“The financial situation is better than it has been in a long time. The stadium expansion is set; we’ll start work soon. The signs point to growth—that’s our goal,” Rang explained.

Especially given the club’s history, Rang emphasized the need for a prudent course. In Essen, there have been periods from time to time when more money was spent than was available.

“We’ve promised our members that we’ll operate from a financially secure position. Step by step, so we don’t get into trouble. That’s how we act in all areas,” said Rang.

Even with regard to the transfer window, which closes on Monday evening (8 p.m.), the Essen board doesn’t want to rule anything out. What else could the roster handle? From his perspective, Rang explained: “We believe we still have some way to go to reach the absolute top of the league. We’ll see how long we can maintain this level. But fundamentally, we’ll take the right steps in the right direction.”

Whether that happens this season or in the coming seasons remains to be seen. The only thing that’s clear is that Essen could still make a move on deadline day—both in terms of signings and departures. Rang: “Marc-Nicolai Pfeifer and Marcus Steegman are active right up to the last minute.”

Ahmet Arslan, who has barely seen any playing time recently, remains a candidate to leave. Rang: “Ahmet Arslan is an important player, including for the locker room. The team’s chemistry is absolutely intact. There’s no need to make a move, but we’ll keep our eyes open until the very end.”
