0–1 in Ulm! No, Dietmar Hirsch, head coach of MSV Duisburg, could not have been satisfied with his players’ performance.
In the first half, MSV showed little bite, lacked compactness, and failed to display the necessary aggressiveness. They were ineffective on set pieces. “That’s what’s been holding us back in recent games. We deserved to lose and were at least one goal worse,” Hirsch explained after the match.
Even after halftime, the picture changed only slightly. Ulm had more chances overall—and significantly better ones—while Duisburg barely made an impact going forward. “We had one or two half-chances, but basically only one real shot on goal,” said the MSV coach.
One player who could change that in the future and make the Zebras even more dangerous in the opponent’s half is Dominik Kother. As RevierSport learned on Sunday evening (February 1), MSV officials led by Managing Director Michael Preetz are in the final stages of a transfer for the left winger, who is currently under contract with Dynamo Dresden (through 2027).
This transfer could still go through because, in the last 48 hours, Austrian first-division club Rapid Vienna decided not to sign Kother after all. The 25-year-old, who has made only twelve appearances (one goal) for a total of 447 minutes this season in Dresden, is determined to leave Dynamo.
Kother, who has played for Karlsruher SC, SSV Jahn Regensburg, Waldhof Mannheim, and Dynamo Dresden throughout his career, would bring a solid amount of experience to the Ruhr region. His stats are impressive: 95 third-division games (22 goals, 16 assists), 67 second-division matches (7, 3), plus two relegation playoff games (2, 2) to keep Regensburg in the league.
Kother had his best run at SSV Jahn. In Regensburg, he tallied 14 goals and 16 assists in 59 games. Perhaps in just a few hours, he’ll be donning the jersey of Regensburg’s league rival, MSV Duisburg.
