VfB coach is self-critical – Full offensive power again against Essen

VfB Oldenburg lost 0:1 at SC Freiburg’s U23 on the last matchday. It was the fourth defeat in a row. Rot-Weiss Essen is coming next Sunday.

VfB Oldenburg is experiencing its first crisis of the current third division season.

The North Germans, who after one point from the first four games of the season had a run of six matches without defeat and even earned a single-digit place in the table, have been something of a surprise of the season so far. Of course: Next to the sensationally playing leader of the table – Spielvereinigung Elversberg.

But recently the Oldenburg engine has been sputtering. The 0:1 last weekend at Freiburg II was already the fourth defeat in a row.

Even if the result from Breisgau sounds close, it was a clear-cut affair. The Oldenburg team acted far too cautiously, far too defensively.

I take it completely on my head. You have to let the boys run. They’re up for playing football, they want to run and be nasty. I took that away from them. You can’t win a game like that.

Dario Fossi

Coach Dario Fossi nevertheless came to the defence of his team and was quite sharp in his self-criticism. The VfB promotion coach said on “Magenta TV”: “I take it completely on my head. You have to let the boys run. They want to play football, they want to run and be nasty. I took that away from them. You can’t win a game like that. We are not the team that waits. The guys tried everything, but they didn’t have a head for offence.”

It can be assumed that the 41-year-old football coach will let his charges off the leash again in the next duel, the comparison of the promoted teams, against Rot-Weiss Essen. Fossi’s summary after Freiburg: “We didn’t manage to get into the offensive. If I had set them up like I usually do, we might have scored a goal.”

On Sunday (1 p.m., RevierSport live ticker), the Oldenburg side then have another chance to score against Rot-Weiss Essen after four defeats and, most recently, 180 minutes without a goal.
