Kother: A Guarantee for Promotion? The Remarkable Record of the Winter Signing

After 22 matchdays, MSV Duisburg is right in the thick of the promotion race in the 3. Liga. New signing Dominik Kother could continue an impressive personal streak.

Following Aljaz Casar (Dynamo Dresden), Lex-Tyher Lobinger (Viktoria Köln), and Dominik Becker (most recently a free agent), MSV Duisburg introduced Dominik Kother on deadline day as their fourth signing of the 2026 winter transfer window.

The 25-year-old winger, who can play on either wing, is joining Wedau on loan until the end of the season from Dynamo Dresden, where he holds a contract through the summer of 2027. For the Saxon club, he has played twelve games in the 2. Bundesliga this season and also appeared in the DFB-Pokal match against Mainz 05.

It’s possible that MSV officials were not only convinced by Kother’s athletic abilities but also impressed by an interesting statistic: Kother has been promoted from the 3. Liga to the 2. Bundesliga in each of the past two seasons.

Playing for Jahn Regensburg in the 2023–24 season, the 1.80-meter-tall speedy winger made a big impact, helping the Bavarian club secure a spot in the promotion-relegation series. With ten goals and eleven assists, Kother played a major role in Regensburg’s successful campaign. He made the difference in both close promotion-relegation matches against Wehen Wiesbaden. In the first leg, which ended 2–2, he scored one goal and set up another. In the 2–1 victory in the second leg, he also contributed a goal and an assist, helping Jahn secure their return to the 2. Liga.

Points Table

Things didn’t really go smoothly for the 25-year-old there, however; after 14 appearances (one goal, one assist), he left Regensburg in January 2025 and joined Dynamo Dresden. And one division lower, Kother once again shone. With six goals and three assists in the second half of the season, he played a major role in helping the Saxons finish second in the standings and earn promotion to the 2. Liga.

MSV Duisburg is now apparently hoping Kother will deliver a similarly successful half-season. On Sunday, the new signing could don the zebra jersey for the first time in the top match against SC Verl.
