The draw between Rot-Weiss Essen and SV Meppen in the third division was overshadowed by a medical emergency at the Hafenstraße stadium.

After around 38 minutes, it was quiet in the Rot-Weiss Essen living room: the stadium on Hafenstraße has very rarely been so quiet.

What had happened? While the match was in progress, Stefan Krämer, coach of SV Meppen, saw that a steward was not feeling well at all. He immediately alerted the paramedics, who rushed to help. The support teams and players of the two opponents also wanted to help immediately.

Referee Dr. Robert Kampka interrupted the game and sent both teams to the catacombs for about ten minutes. Fortunately, the emergency medical response was positive. The stadium announcer gave the all-clear: “The steward is conscious and responsive again.”

After the nil number, which was overshadowed by this emergency medical intervention, Rot-Weiss Essen’s CEO Marcus Uhlig was relieved and also praised the initial reactions of the opposing coach and the benches of both teams.

“The fact that Stefan Krämer immediately ran to the scene, and that the coaches and players from both sides were there immediately and helped, was really strong. Fortunately, the steward was responsive again a short time later and could be taken to hospital by ambulance. Everything went well,” said Uhlig after the match.

Because of the incident and the sixth game in a row without a defeat, RWE could live with the draw. Even if, as against Zwickau, the Essen team missed out on defeating a rival in the battle to stay in the league at Hafenstraße. But: RWE has won all of its last three away matches.

And: In the last match of the year, Rot-Weiss Essen will travel again on Monday (14 November, RevierSport live ticker) – to Grünwalder Straße to TSV 1860 München. Perhaps a good omen for a year-end with three points…
