Straelen boss leaves club’s future open

SV Straelen are currently bottom of the table in the Regionalliga West. The club boss is not sure how the club will be positioned in the future.

Seven points from 16 matches and eleven points behind the bottom of the table: SV Straelen can actually start to get their plans for the Oberliga-Niederrhein out of the drawer.

But club boss Hermann Tecklenburg does not seem to have given up on the Regionalliga West quite yet. “I’ll make a firm commitment: if we pick up eight or nine points from the remaining four games before the winter break, we’ll attack again. If it’s only two or three, we can plan for the Oberliga,” Tecklenburg is quoted as saying in the RP and Fupa.

Yet the 74-year-old entrepreneur had big plans before the season. Sunday Oliseh, former Nigeria star and Borussia Dortmund professional, came as coach and was supposed to lead Straelen to a single-digit place in the table. However, the 1996 Olympic champion resigned after only a few weeks.

Tecklenburg, however, does not want to blame Oliseh for the misery at all. “Sunday Oliseh is an absolute professional coach and an extraordinary person. I have no regrets that we hired him. His expectations were probably too high. And SV Straelen is a bit too small for him,” says the Straelen club boss.

The costs for security personnel are enormously high, even for home games attended by only 500 spectators. That is out of all proportion and I find it disgusting, to put it in German. And of course you have to ask yourself whether a town like Straelen and regional league football go together in the long run.

Hermann Tecklenburg

For a good 20 years, Tecklenburg has been the boss at Römerstraße. How things will go on in the future, he doesn’t really know yet either and tends to leave it open. “I can’t look into the future either. Next summer, I will first accompany my wife to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. We will then see what happens with our first team,” says Tecklenburg in the “RP” and to “Fupa”.

In the meantime, Tecklenburg asks himself how sensible it is for SV Straelen to play in the 4th division: “The costs for security personnel are enormous, even for home games that are only attended by 500 spectators. That is out of all proportion and I find it disgusting, to put it mildly. And of course you have to ask yourself whether a town like Straelen and regional league football go together in the long run. “
