Eight BVB contracts end – this is what Kehl says about Reus’ future

The future of BVB captain Marco Reus beyond the summer is uncertain. This is what Dortmund’s sports director Sebastian Kehl has to say about it.

Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund wants to sit down with captain Marco Reus for contract talks “as agreed”. Then they will discuss the future “calmly and in a very trusting manner”. This is what BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl told Bild. According to Bild, however, the clarifying talks about the new contract will not be held until next year, as the ailing Reus will be part of the club’s Asia tour, which runs until 1 December.

The 33-year-old BVB captain still has a contract until 30 June 2023. “When a player is well past 30, you have to look at how long he is still able to deliver top performances,” BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke had said recently.

Reus has already stressed that he wants to end his career at Dortmund. “I have already made my wishes known in the past weeks and months. Everyone knows that I have a great relationship with this club, that I love it very much,” Reus told Bild-TV. “How far that is now, you’ll have to ask Sebastian Kehl. “

And the sporting director replied that the appreciation for Reus, who has been with Borussia since 2012, was very high. However, Kehl also looked at the captain’s state of health. Reus, who has often been hampered by injuries in his career, is currently suffering from ankle problems. That is why he missed the World Cup participation. Reus is currently working on his comeback on the Asia tour.

Kehl: “Recently, the focus was 100 per cent on his injury and the desire to be able to play for us again and to be fit for the World Cup. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out. But nothing has changed in the basic plan.”

Reus is not the only BVB professional whose contract expires at the end of the season. The futures of Mats Hummels, Youssoufa Moukoko, Raphael Guerreiro, Mahmoud Dahoud, Anthony Modeste, Felix Passlack and Luca Unbehaun are also open. (with ea)
