Rot-Weiss Essen could not get beyond a goalless draw against struggling SV Meppen in their last home match of the year. The RWE players were disappointed.
16,467 fans – including around 1000 supporters from the Emsland region – made the pilgrimage to the Hafenstraße stadium on Wednesday evening to watch the third division match between Rot-Weiss Essen and SV Meppen. After 90 minutes, the spectators saw no goals – the game ended 0:0.
In the end, too little for both teams. But while the Meppeners were still in agreement, the players on the red and white side were rather dissatisfied.
“It went back and forth. I think the result was okay in the end. It definitely gave us hope. Our football-mad fans gave us great support. We have to take that with us now and make sure we really go for it on Saturday against Osnabrück,” Meppen’s 36-year-old goalkeeper Erik Domaschke, who played his first game of the season, summed up to “Magenta TV”.
Domaschke saw progress despite the twelfth game in a row without a win. The mood at RWE was different. The promoted team has now been unbeaten for six matches.
But winger Lawrence Ennali summed it up on “Magenta TV”: “We didn’t deserve any more that night. It was a dirty game! The 90 minutes on Sunday, then the two days of rest, today the 90 minutes, of course you’re tired. But still, that’s no excuse. We simply expected much more for this game.”
After the 1-1 draw against Zwickau, RWE also missed out on a home win against Meppen, the next team to finish bottom of the table. While there have been three away wins in a row recently – in Freiburg, in Mannheim, in Oldenburg – Essen has been waiting for three points at home since 19 September – 1-0 against Saarbrücken.
On Monday, 14 November (7 p.m., RevierSport live ticker), RWE will be back on the road. The last game of the year is at TSV 1860 München.
