Another snack to shorten the waiting time, then it’s time to go: You’ve come specifically to watch the game of the Portland Thorns, the city’s own women’s football team in “The Sports Bra”. At Jenny Nguyen’s Sports Bar in Portland, Oregon, there is only women’s sport to watch – by women for women, because:
“There’s this universal feeling that women have when they go to sports bars,” bar owner Jenny Nguyen finds, “It’s not just me, it’s not just my friends. It’s actually pretty common, it ranges from uncomfortable to insecure.”
Nguyen got the idea when she wanted to watch a live women’s basketball game herself with friends. Despite a total of 32 screens, however, she could only persuade the waitress at a sports bar to show the game on at least one screen – without sound.
In search of more women’s sports
Since the bar opened in April, reactions have been positive. But she says it is not so easy to put together the programme for a regular sports programme. “I would say one of the most difficult tasks we have here is to find women’s sports that we can show on TV,” Nguyen explains.
So far, however, the female visitors – as well as the male visitors – seem to like what is on offer.
