Matthias Georg leaves the regional league club 1. FC Düren as advisor to the presidium. From consultant to managing director – at a club with a long tradition in the top division.
Consultant Matthias Georg and 1. FC Düren will be going their separate ways from mid-April, as the Rhinelanders announced. To be more precise, from Monday, April 15 at the latest. That’s when Georg will take up his position as managing director at Oberliga club Sportfreunde Siegen. This was confirmed by the Siegerland club in a club announcement.
“A lot has happened on the pitch in recent months and we want to seize the opportunity to take another important step towards a successful long-term future for the club by installing an experienced managing director,” said Roland Schöler, chairman of Sportfreunde Siegen.
He continued: “Matthias has proven, particularly during his time at TSV Steinbach Haiger and most recently in Düren, that he knows how to further expand professional structures within a club and initiate sustainable development. He also has an extremely large network and, as a native of Siegerland, is an excellent fit for our team.”
Sportfreunde are currently in eighth place in the Oberliga Westfalen and have nothing to do with either the relegation or promotion battle.
Georg wants to build on this, as he said in the club’s press release: “Sportfreunde Siegen are an absolutely traditional club with a long history, which I myself was able to experience for years as a child and youngster in the stands. With my work, I would like to make a significant contribution to continuing the successful path we have taken and laying a long-term foundation for successful work. “
He emphasized once again that his commitment is long-term: “Siegen is a city that is totally enthusiastic about sport and the desire for a return to professional soccer is equally high among the people and the economy in South Westphalia. To achieve this, however, we must first create a basis together, gain trust and get the whole region excited about SFS again. The board and the team led by coach Thorsten Nehrbauer have already taken the first step in this direction.”
The current sporting director Ottmar Griffel will remain with Sportfreunde Siegen as the person responsible for scouting and will also act as a link to the youth department
