After 60 years – BVB legend Timo Konietzka’s record broken

He scored the first goal in the newly founded Bundesliga and thrilled fans at Borussia Dortmund, among other clubs: now Timo Konietzka’s record has been broken.

At first glance, a goal from Harry Kane in Bayern Munich’s 8-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg doesn’t seem very spectacular. On the contrary: with his only goal in the 69th minute, the Englishman has been rather economical, having now scored 20 times in 16 Bundesliga games.

His Bundesliga statistics alone since his arrival at Bayern in the summer of 2023 seem like something from another world: 36 goals in 32 games, 26 goals in 31 games, and now 20 goals in 16 games. Kane has been the measure of all things since his arrival.

With his goal against VfL Wolfsburg, the Englishman has now broken an ancient record set by BVB legend Timo Konietzka. After Konietzka, who died in March 2012 at the age of 73, the Englishman is only the second player in the Bundesliga to have scored at least 20 goals in each of his first three Bundesliga seasons.

Points Table

Konietzka scored 20 goals in 25 games in the 1963/64 season, the first season of the newly founded Bundesliga. In the following season, Konietzka scored 22 goals in 28 games. He played both seasons for Borussia Dortmund.

In the summer of 1965, Konietzka joined TSV 1860 Munich and added another 26 goals in 33 Bundesliga games. It was not until the following season that the streak came to an end, when Konietzka scored only four goals in 14 games for the Lions. Sixty years later, Kane has now equaled this record.

During his playing career, Konietzka won the German championship twice (1962/63 with Borussia Dortmund, 1965/66 with TSV 1860 Munich), once DFB Cup winner (1864/65 with Borussia Dortmund) and twice West German Cup winner (1962/63 and 1964/65, both with Borussia Dortmund).

As a coach, he later stood on the sidelines for Bayer 05 Uerdingen and BVB, among others. However, he only won titles with FC Zurich: four Swiss championships (1973/74, 1974/75, 1975/76, 1981/82) and three cup victories (1971/72, 1972/73, 1975/76).
