After calls for Nowak to be sacked, RWO squander lead

Fans of Rot-Weiß Oberhausen demand the coach be sacked before kick-off against Lippstadt, then watch as RWO squander a 1-0 lead.

The atmosphere at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen could hardly have been more tense before the kickoff of their home game against SV Lippstadt. RWO fans put up a banner behind the goal reading “Nowak out.” Their calls for the coach’s dismissal were repeated loudly.

90 minutes later, the frustration had grown. After a 0-0 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach II, Oberhausen had to accept their second draw (1-1) against a relegation candidate in just a few days. Sven Kreyer had defied the unrest early on with a shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-0. Shortly afterwards, he narrowly missed making it 2-0 after good work from Moritz Stoppelkamp. The visitors initially allowed Oberhausen to push them back completely.

It took Lippstadt half an hour to grow in confidence. Lars Holtkamp had the best chance to make it 1-1 after winning one of many midfield battles, but he failed to square the ball across goal for the unmarked Viktor Maier (42).

RWO came out more actively after the break, but SVL soon became more daring again. The reward? The 1-1 equalizer by Maier. A loss of possession, followed by alarmingly passive play by the Oberhausen defense, made it possible (57′).

RWO had a chance shortly afterwards, but Sebastian Mai shot over (71′), and Robin Benz then gave the visitors another opportunity. The keeper was just able to clear off the line (74′).

SV Lippstadt were closer to victory than the home side in the closing stages, but Benz kept a clean sheet. However, the 1-1 draw in Oberhausen is unlikely to have brought much calm.
