After demolition in Saarbrücken – game against Bayern also questionable

On Sunday, the Ludwigsparkstadion of 1. FC Saarbrücken was still under water. A solution is now being worked on at full speed to make the match against FC Bayern possible.

The match between 1. FC Saarbrücken and Dynamo Dresden resembled a water battle on Sunday. After 45 minutes, referee Arne Aarnink decided to abandon the game at 0-0 – there was too much rainwater on the pitch.

However, the next big highlight for FCS is due to take place at the Ludwigsparkstadion on Wednesday (8.45pm). Record champions FC Bayern Munich will be the guests in the second round of the DFB Cup. The match has been sold out for weeks, with 16,003 spectators able to get a ticket.

However, it is questionable whether they will get to see the game on Wednesday. The rain is expected to continue in the Saarland on Tuesday and Wednesday. So the pitch will have no time to recover

The common goal of all involved is that the game can take place on Wednesday.

City of Saarbrücken

At the request of the SID, the city of Saarbrücken announced on Monday: “The common declared goal of all parties involved is that the match can take place on Wednesday.” To this end, the pitch is being “closely” inspected and worked on. In addition, in coordination with the German Football Association, an aerator – a machine that punches holes in the ground and then fills them with sand to ensure playability in wet conditions – was purchased at short notice.

These measures have already improved the turf, as the city reports. However, it remains to be seen whether this will be enough to allow a soccer match to be played on Wednesday evening without an increased risk of injury.

A cancellation is likely to play into Bayern’s hands, at least in the short term, as the important top match at Borussia Dortmund is already scheduled for Saturday (6.30 pm). However, a postponement is likely to be difficult, as FCB already have a clash with Galatasaray in the Champions League after the BVB game. This will be followed by an international break before the next English week awaits at the end of November with the Champions League match against Copenhagen. One week later, on December 5 and 6, the round of 16 will take place.
