After Essen’s Götze comes midfield talent from MSV Duisburg

MSV Duisburg has been relegated, yet almost all of its first players are now playing at a higher level – like this talented US player.

It’s quite astonishing: MSV Duisburg has been relegated from the 3rd division without a sound. And the first five players to leave all land great new clubs.

Caspar Jander moves to 1. FC Nürnberg in the 2nd division, Niklas Kölle to SSV Ulm 1846, promoted to the 2nd division, Baran Mogultay to the very ambitious BVB U23 and keeper Vincent Müller goes to the Danish 1st division.

Now there is the next player who has made it into the 2nd Bundesliga despite MSV’s relegation. The 19-year-old US-Colombian Santiago Castaneda is moving to SC Paderborn – the sixth player to join the club this summer.

“Santiago is a great talent who brings numerous advantages to Paderborn. In addition to his height, he impresses above all with his running strength and willingness to fight every duel with full commitment. We are delighted that he has chosen Paderborn,” explained Managing Director Sport Benjamin Weber.

After initial spells with Tampa Bay United and Florida Premier FC, the 1.88-meter-tall Castaneda had recommended himself for a move to Germany with strong performances for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL Championship. In Duisburg, he played 30 third division games in which he scored two goals. With his first professional goal on December 2, 2023, he secured a 1-0 home win for the Zebras against VfB Lübeck.

The SCP had previously secured the services of Felix Götze (Rot-Weiss Essen), Luca Herrmann (Dynamo Dresden), Markus Schubert (Vitesse Arnhem), Tjark Scheller (St. Pauli II) and Anton Bäuerle (Bayer Leverkusen U19).

An overview of the MSV Duisburg squad:

With Maximilian Braune and Batuhan Yavuz (both until 2026), only two players from the relegated squad had a contract.

Additions: Alexander Hahn (Preußen Münster)

Departures: Caspar Jander (1. FC Nürnberg), Baran Mogultay (BVB II), Tim Köther (back to Heidenheim after loan), Vincent Müller (Aalborg BK), Niklas Kölle (SSV Ulm), Santiago Castaneda (SC Paderborn), rest unknown
