After false start: Two new arrivals for coach Dirk Tönnies

After the failed start to the season, SpVg Schonnebeck can sign two new players. One is a returnee, the other comes from a regional league team.

SpVg Schonnebeck has made a mess of the start of the season in the Oberliga Niederrhein. After four games, the Swallows’ record is: Zero points, 4:10 goals, red lantern. On Thursday, SpVg announced the arrival of two new players.

One of them is New Zealander Kingsley Sinclair. The 21-year-old comes from regional league club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, with whom he signed a contract as recently as July. However, the contract was terminated and Sinclair’s path to Schonnebeck was clear. At RWO, Sinclair, who had already been training with the Kleeblättern since January, was unable to recommend himself for a stint in the Regionalliga.

The Schonnebeckers are all the more convinced of the new acquisition. “With Kingsley, we are even more versatile in attack than before. He can be used in various positions in the attack, both on the flanks and in the centre, and has a very strong goal-scoring ability. Unfortunately, he has not yet made the breakthrough at his first stop in Germany with Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, but he is a huge reinforcement for us. We made great efforts to realise Kingsley’s transfer because we wanted him so badly,” said Christian Leben, sporting director, describing the qualities of the attacking player and his joy at the new addition.

Leben also does not see the remaining language barrier as a problem: “We will welcome Kingsley well into our ranks so that he will quickly feel very comfortable. If we succeed, I’m sure that he will soon make a splash after a short acclimatisation period.”

For the defensive area, the Oberliga bottom team has also strengthened. Veli Cetin joins the defence of coach Dirk Tönnies’ team. The 19-year-old most recently played for Rot-Weiss Essen’s U19s and made 16 appearances in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga West last season. “Veli brings a lot of potential with him, is a hard-working player, always down-to-earth and also a real Schonnebeck boy,” said Leben, explaining the signing. Cetin has already played for the Schonnebeck team from the Bambinis to the U11s.
