Oberliga club SpVg Schonnebeck will have to do without captain Matthias Bloch for a long time due to injury. Forecasting spoke to the 33-year-old.
The news came as a shock to SpVg Schonnebeck and their captain Matthias Bloch: last Saturday, the Oberliga club announced that Bloch had suffered a fracture to the head of his tibia in the second leg of the season opener in Kleve and would be out until the end of the season.
Curious: Despite his injury, the captain played in the following two games at VfB Hilden and against Union Nettetal. It was only before the away game in Sonsbeck, which Schonnebeck won 3:2, that the veteran was diagnosed as being out for the season. This news was naturally devastating for Bloch personally.
After all, he had already had to miss months at the start of the season due to a triple inner meniscus tear and only then fought his way back into the starting eleven. “It’s really bitter and a great pity. I came back well after the injury and used the winter break to get really fit again,” emphasized Bloch in the Forecasting interview.
The 33-year-old himself would not have expected the injury to be so serious: “I was actually substituted at the game in Kleve due to a minor head injury. But that was a precautionary measure. But then I also noticed that I had slight pain in my knee. But it wasn’t so painful that I thought I should take a break straight away. So I carried on playing as normal. But the pain just wouldn’t go away. I then went to the doctor and had an MRI appointment last Wednesday. The fracture of the tibial plateau was diagnosed directly on Thursday.”
The Schonnebeck captain and key player said the following about the possible duration of his absence: “I’m currently assuming twelve weeks. The season would be over for me. But I’ll have another follow-up MRI in five or six weeks. Then we’ll see how the injury has developed. In terms of my head, it’s a bit difficult for me. I’m wearing a splint and don’t actually have much pain. “
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m still there at every training session and game. I try to support the team from the outside and talk to the boys a lot. Our squad is really solid and in a flow. They have my complete trust.

The Swallows are playing a very good season and are in third place in the table after 21 games. Runners-up Ratingen 04/19 are just two points away. Even if Bloch can no longer play this season, he is giving the team his maximum support and still has a good feeling for the remaining games: “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m still there at every training session and game. I try to support the team from the outside and talk to the lads a lot. Our squad is really solid and in a flow. They have my complete trust.”
At 33, Matthias Bloch is in the fall of his career. Despite the latest setback, the 148-time Oberliga player is fighting back: “I’m definitely not thinking about giving up just yet. “
