MSV Duisburg continues to be in deep crisis. Rot-Weiss Essen won the derby with the Zebras with 2:1 – the winning goal for the Essen team was scored in injury time.
MSV Duisburg lost 1:2 (0:1) to Rot-Weiss Essen in front of almost 26,000 fans at their home arena. Essen is sniffing at the promotion places, MSV remains bottom of the table.
Rot-Weiss Essen got off to the better start and MSV Duisburg had Vincent Müller to thank for the fact that the visitors from Hafenstrasse did not lead after just three minutes.
What had happened? After a mistake by Santiago Castaneda, Essen’s captain Vinko Sapina made a strong run and served Isaiah Young, who ran all alone towards the goal but failed to beat Müller.
And it continued towards the goal of the Zebras – next dangerous attack of the Essener after eight minutes: Via Cedric Harenbrock, the ball landed with Young, whose cross in the middle, however, found no taker. That would have been very dangerous otherwise.
You could feel the uncertainty among the hosts. They just seemed too nervous and hardly anything went forward. It was different for RWE. The Red-Whites cut Duisburg in half after a good half an hour.
The 33rd minute: Harenbrock again served Young, who could actually finish in the penalty area, but he stepped into the ground and failed to hit the ball. Just a minute later: Lucas Brumme had the 1:0 on his foot, but he failed from close range to the strong Müller, who continued to keep Duisburg in the game. After the Essen power play, there were also loud whistles from the Duisburg crowd. Young (43rd) once again tested Müller from distance, but he again held the ball. That was simply too little what the team of Boris Schommers showed in the first 45 minutes.
And Schommers must have found the right words during the break. Because the way MSV came out of the dressing room, one or two people in the stadium wondered if they were really the same players as in the first 45 minutes. The Zebras started like the fire department.
After the restart, they fired at the Essen goal from all angles. But Alexander Esswein (47th), a Thomas Pledl corner (48th), which was sent onto his own goal by an Essen foot, and a double chance by Chinedu Ekene and Pledl (49th), who attempted a bicycle kick, failed to find the outstanding RWE keeper Jakob Golz.
RWE had to stabilize again and take a breather. MSV had ended its power play for the time being. And in the phase when it became quiet, RWE struck – in the person of Marvin Obuz.
Substitute ex-Duisburg player Andreas Wiegel was able to sneak through, Obuz cut inside from the right and hit the ball into the top left corner from 18 meters. What a dream goal with the left foot – the guest block explodes. 1:0 RWE after 63 minutes.
Everything looked as if RWE would celebrate its first derby victory at MSV since April 16, 1983, when Essen won 2-0 in Duisburg. But then came the 90th minute: Robin Müller crossed and Sapina straddled the ball into his own goal, 1:1! Whoever thought that that was it, was proven wrong.
First, substitute Benjamin Girth (90.+1) failed to beat the outstanding Golz, then on the other side: Felix Götze crossed and Mustafa Korouma headed – goal: 2:1 for Rot-Weiss Essen (90.+3)! First Essen victory in over 40 years.
