After promotion – Great honour for ex-Bochum player Maxwell Gyamfi.

Second division club VfL Osnabrück will start the first DFB Cup round with a live match against 1. FC Köln. Captain will once again be Maxwell Gyamfi.

VfL Osnabrück secured their first point after promotion to the 2. Liga last weekend. At SC Paderborn, the new second-division team fought their way to a 1-1 draw – thanks to Florian Kleinhansl’s late equaliser.

More than 3000 VfL fans travelled to Paderborn and did not regret coming. For the purple and white team, the draw was an important sense of achievement, after the opening match against Karlsruher SC was still lost unhappily with 2:3.

In Paderborn, Maxwell Gyamfi once again captained the team. Already against KSC, Gyamfi was named captain by his coach Tobias Schweinsteiger. Due to the injury of the regular captain Timo Beermann, who had to undergo an ankle operation and will be out for several weeks, Schweinsteiger was looking for a deputy for this period and found it in Gyamfi.

For the 23-year-old, this decision is a great honour. The centre-back only moved from Hamburger SV’s U21 to Osnabrück in 2022. However, the 1.89-metre man took his first steps at senior level at Castroper Straße.

He played for VfL Bochum from 2017 to 2020. The centre-back spent two seasons with the U19s and played 32 games there. In the 2019/20 season, he was part of VfL’s professional squad, but did not make an appearance in the 2. Liga at the time.

Gyamfi was also appointed to the team council

This was in stark contrast to VfL Osnabrück, where he immediately established himself as a key performer and leading player in his first professional season. This development has now been rewarded. Gyamfi was also appointed to the team council. In addition to the Dortmund native and captain Beermann, veteran Robert Tesche, Niklas Wiemann and newcomer Bashkim Ajdini are also on the council.

Osnabrück will not play their next competitive match until Monday (14 August, 8.45 pm). They will then face Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln in the first DFB Cup main round. A sell-out crowd is expected at Bremer Brücke and the match will be broadcast live on ARD. Included: Captain Maxwell Gyamfi
