Landesliga side SG Schönebeck secured another important point in the relegation battle on Sunday. However, this point came at a high price.
SG Schönebeck is playing a surprisingly strong season as a promoted team. With 22 points after 16 games, SGS are in tenth place in the table, four points ahead of the relegation places and five points clear of the first relegation spot.
Behind FC Kray, who were relegated from the Oberliga, the district league champions are the second-best team in Essen’s Landesliga – ahead of VfB Frohnhausen, ESC Rellinghausen and SpVgg Steele.
“We are very satisfied with the season so far and are also increasingly able to keep up our game over longer phases in the matches,” summarizes Schönebeck’s promotion coach Olaf Rehmann. SGS were able to celebrate another respectable success on the last matchday: Rehmann’s team drew 2:2 at fifth-placed SF Lowick.
After Dennis Wibbe had given them a 1-0 lead, the favorites turned the game in their favor in the closing stages, but Schönebeck had the right answer. In the 91st minute, Anel Corovic scored the goal for the acclaimed 2:2 equalizer.
“The game in Lowick showed what we still need to work on – namely keeping the game going regardless of the result. The lead threw us off our rhythm rather than helping us. We simply have to keep playing forward and not become passive,” said the SGS coach, who still sees room for improvement.
However, the coach could not really be happy about this point win. The reason: striker Buba Ceesay, who only came on as a substitute in the 84th minute, had to come off after the equalizer and was taken off by ambulance.
Since the bone was visible, an open fracture was suspected. Fortunately, this was not confirmed. The bone does not appear to be damaged. Buba was stitched up with eleven stitches and then discharged home.

Rehmann: “Buba injured himself during the equalizer in stoppage time. He flicked the ball past the goalkeeper, who caught him as he tried to save. Buba had a deep flesh wound above his knee. As the bone was visible, an open fracture was suspected. Fortunately, this was not confirmed. The bone did not appear to be damaged. Buba received eleven stitches and was then released to go home.”
So Ceesay was probably lucky after all and will in all likelihood “only” be out for several weeks and not several months
