After seven years at BVB – defender joins future rival

He has made it into Borussia Dortmund’s second team. Lion Semic is not aiming for the top for now – he is moving within the 3rd division.

VfL Osnabrück is gearing up for the upcoming third division season. The club from Lower Saxony have announced that right-back Lion Semic is coming to Bremer Brücke from Borussia Dortmund II.

“After a total of seven years at BVB, I’m now looking forward to an exciting task and a new environment in which I have to prove myself anew. I want to quickly settle into the club and the team during preparation so that I can make the best possible contribution so that we can play a successful season in the 3rd division,” commented Semic on his move to the relegated second division side.

The 20-year-old transferred to Borussia Dortmund’s youth academy in 2017, where he progressed through all of the youth teams up to the senior level. In the 2021/22 season, he celebrated the German A-Junior Championship with the U19s.

In the same season, he made his senior debut alongside professionals Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham in BVB’s 6-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg. In the past season, Semic made 17 appearances for the Yellow & Blacks’ second team in the 3rd division, scoring one goal as a full-back in a 5-2 win against SC Verl.

“Lion Semic is a young, dynamic and offensive-minded full-back. With his healthy aggression and pace dribbling, among other things, he fits in very well with our playing idea and Bremer Brücke. We are convinced that his development is not yet complete and that he can continue to realize his potential with us. In addition to his footballing ability, you could also sense his hunger for VfL and the task here in a personal conversation,” said Sporting Director Philipp Kaufmann.

VfL Osnabrück were relegated straight back to the third tier after their sensational promotion in the 2022/23 post-season last season, finishing bottom of the 2nd division. They will now face NRW clubs Rot-Weiss Essen, Alemannia Aachen, Arminia Bielefeld and Viktoria Köln, among others.
