Third division team Rot-Weiss Essen suffered a 0-4 defeat at Hansa Rostock. Goalkeeper Jakob Golz was stunned.
Just three days after a disappointing but deserved 1-3 home defeat against SC Verl, Rot-Weiss Essen traveled to crisis-stricken second division relegation candidates Hansa Rostock. It was RWE’s first visit to the Ostseestadion since 2006.
It was a day to forget: RWE suffered a 4-0 defeat in the basement battle. Essen lacked the necessary precision and determination up front, and the defense was extremely porous. The fact that Jakob Golz was Essen’s best player despite conceding four goals spoke volumes. The number one kept his team from suffering an even heavier defeat with a number of good saves.
After the game, Golz was visibly shaken in an interview with “Magenta Sport”: “To be honest, I’m really lost for words. We allowed too much, didn’t make enough of our chances up front and then let ourselves get shot down.”
The RWE fans had supported their team throughout the game, with some even arriving on a special train during the second half. Afterwards, the disappointment in the away section was naturally huge. Golz showed understanding for this:
All we can do is apologize to our fans. What we delivered here today in the 0-4 defeat was madness. Everyone is disappointed, angry, and stunned.
Jakob Golz.
“All we can do is apologize to our fans. What we delivered here today in the 0-4 defeat was madness. Everyone is disappointed, angry, and stunned. We have to let it sink in and make a completely fresh start. We need points, that’s clear. Because we’re at the bottom of the table. We all have to give it our all.”
The Red and Whites are back in action next Saturday (November 2, 2 p.m.) with a home game against newly promoted Energie Cottbus.
The Lusatians are the biggest positive surprise of the season so far and have the second-best offense in the 3rd league with 26 goals. Tomorrow (October 27, 1:30 p.m.), head coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz’s team will face 1860 Munich at home. But there are no more excuses now, RWE has to deliver.
