Third-division club Rot-Weiss Essen lost 4-0 at Hansa Rostock. Goalkeeper Jakob Golz was stunned.
Just three days after the disappointing but deserved 3-1 home defeat against SC Verl, Rot-Weiss Essen traveled to crisis-ridden second division relegated team Hansa Rostock. For the first time since 2006, RWE was a guest at the Ostseestadion.
It was to be a day to forget: RWE conceded a 0-4 thrashing in the relegation battle. Up front, Essen lacked the necessary precision and determination, while the defense was extremely porous. The fact that Jakob Golz was the best Essen player with four goals conceded spoke volumes. With many good saves, the number one prevented an even higher defeat.
After the game, Golz appeared visibly shaken in an interview with “Magenta Sport”: “To be honest, I’m at a loss for words. We let in too much, didn’t make enough of our chances up front and then we let ourselves be shot down.”
The RWE fans had supported their team throughout the entire game, with some of them only arriving during the second half on the special train. Afterwards, the disappointment in the away section was naturally great. Golz showed understanding for this:
We can only apologize to our fans. What we delivered here today with the 0:4 was insane. Everyone is disappointed, angry, stunned.
Jakob Golz.
“We can only apologize to our fans. What we delivered today in the 4-0 defeat was insane. Everyone is disappointed, angry, and stunned. We have to let it sink in and make a completely fresh start. We need points, that’s clear. Because we are at the bottom of the table. We all have to give it our all.”
The Red & Whites will be back in action on Saturday (November 2, 2:00 pm) when they host newly promoted Energie Cottbus.
The club from Lusatia has been the biggest positive surprise of the season so far and has the second-best offense in the 3rd division with 26 goals. Tomorrow (October 27, 1:30 p.m.), the team of head coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz will face 1860 Munich at home. But there are no more excuses now, RWE has to deliver.
