After a weak start in the Regionalliga, SG Wattenscheid wanted to gain self-confidence in the Westfalenpokal. At least they reached the 2nd round.
In the first round of the Westfalenpokal, SG Wattenscheid 09, promoted from the Regionalliga, had to play against SV Hohenlimburg, a team from the Landesliga. The 2:1 victory was hard-fought.
Before the match, the SGW was active on the transfer market and signed Tim Brdaric for the so far shaky defence. The 22-year-old centre-back was last under contract with KFC Uerdingen.
Wattenscheid’s sporting director Christian Pozo y Tamayo emphasised: “With Tim, we have been able to win over a player who, despite his 22 years, knows exactly what is important in the Regionalliga. He can play both in defensive midfield and in the centre of defence. Last season, he proved his ability to assert himself in both positions. We are pleased that he has decided to join 09.”
In the cup against the Landesliga club, Brdaric was in the squad but not in the starting eleven. And after three defeats at the start of the new season, the start in the cup also failed. SV Hohenlimburg took the lead after eleven minutes. Albian Kamaj scored for the outsiders.
Fifteen minutes later, Dennis Knabe equalised for coach Christian Britscho’s team. They went into the dressing room with the score at 1-1.
And after the change it took until the 67th minute before Niko Bosnjak could score the Wattenscheid lead. The result remained close until the end.
In the 2nd round, the SG Wattenscheid might have to face a tough opponent. At the end of August, the SGW has to play the winner of the match between Rot-Weiß Hünsborn and Preußen Münster. Münster is the clear favourite.
But before that, the SGW has to get its act together in the Regionalliga. The next chance is on Saturday (2 p.m.) at home against Fortuna Köln.
