The mood at FC St. Pauli is exuberant on Halloween. FC Schalke 04 were knocked out of the DFB Cup 2:1 after extra time.
Once again trailing 0:1 and once again FC St. Pauli won in the end. In recent weeks, Hamburg have repeatedly turned around deficits and won their second division matches.
This was also the case on 31 October 2023 in the 2nd round of the DFB Cup against FC Schalke 04. After a weak first half, St. Pauli trailed 0:1 in the second division clash with the Gelsenkirchen side, but deservedly turned the game around to win 2:1.
From the 46th minute onwards, only the Bundesliga 2 leaders played, scored the 1:1 and were rewarded for their courageous performance with the 2:1 winning goal in extra time.
Sporting director Andreas Bornemann, who was delighted to receive a bonus of around €860,000 as well as advancing to the round of 16, was once again delighted with the team’s performance
“We always find solutions. And of course it’s also a question of mentality. The team doesn’t let itself get rattled. The coach also makes the right decisions when making substitutions. You have to take your hat off to everyone involved,” said a delighted Bornemann on the pay-TV channel “Sky”.
St. Pauli have yet to lose a competitive match this season. There have been six wins and five draws in the league and two successes in the cup. When asked by the Sky reporter whether the Hamburg team’s run is starting to get a bit scary for the manager, Bornemann replied: “No, the run of success isn’t getting scary. We’ve always had good half-seasons in the past. We want to play a good season and not a half-season.”
Promotion battle and the extra bread of the DFB Cup. It suits Bornemann: “The cup is a great competition and we now have one more game before Christmas. But we’re happy to accept that and of course hope for a home game.” And: Nobody will like traveling to this FC St. Pauli – not even a Bundesliga team
