The U19s of 1. FC Köln benefited from a curious own goal by Filippo Mané in their 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. After the game, both coaches were satisfied with the draw.
When the U19s of 1. FC Köln faced league leaders Borussia Dortmund, the starting position was clear.
Dortmund were considered the favorites – not only because of their own strong record, but also because Cologne U19s’ season had been pretty mixed so far. The BVB youngsters lived up to their role as favorites, at least in terms of the share of play. Mike Tullberg’s team was clearly superior, especially in the first half, but were unable to take advantage of their chances.
A curious own goal by BVB defender Filippo Mané then gave FC a surprise lead in the second half. Cologne showed great fighting spirit to hold on to the lead, but in the end it was only enough for a draw.
Substitute Vincenzo Onofrietti’s goal to make it 1:1 at least gave the BVB youngsters a point.
BVB Under-19 coach Mike Tullberg was unhappy with the result, but praised his team’s performance: “If we play this game ten times, I’m sure we’ll win nine. My boys played a top game. We’ve had a bit of luck in other games, but today we had no luck at all. Normally you win a game like this, but it’s fun and always exciting to play against Cologne.”
In view of the impressive record of 17 wins in 19 games, Tullberg was nevertheless satisfied with the overall situation.
Cologne coach Stefan Ruthenbeck was also happy with the draw. “I think Dortmund were better than us, especially in the first half. There were two great opportunities for Dortmund and we could have gone behind,” admitted Ruthenbeck, but also praised his team’s improved performance in the second half. “I think we were more open in the second half. At some point, we missed the chance to counter-attack better. But I think the bottom line is that the 1:1 is completely fine,” said Ruthenbeck.
