Almost ten times as valuable as at MSV Duisburg – former Zebra player flourishes in Switzerland

Currently sidelined by injury, a former MSV Duisburg talent has made some big strides abroad. He is currently playing in Switzerland.

Sinan Karweina was a regular at FC Luzern. He has already played seven times for the Swiss first division club this season, seven times from the start. The 1.73-meter-tall center forward has repaid the club with one goal and two assists in the league.

Things were going well for the former MSV Duisburg striker. But since the end of September, Karweina has been forced to watch from the sidelines. A muscle injury is keeping the Gummersbach native out of action, probably until the end of the year.

What makes it particularly bitter is that not only was the 25-year-old in good form, but so was FC Luzern. Max Meyer’s former club is in third place in the Super League, within striking distance of leaders FC Zurich. Lucerne is three points behind.

On the last matchday, they suffered a 1-2 defeat against Young Boys Bern, who have former Bochum player Silvere Ganvoula in their ranks. Bern has not really got going yet, but the three points have at least allowed them to move away from the bottom of the table.

Even though Karweina himself is currently sidelined, his market value continues to rise sharply. His last market value from his time at MSV Duisburg was listed on “transfermarkt.de” on June 14, 2021, at €175,000. Karweina is now listed there at €1.7 million – almost ten times his previous value.

Karweina never really made it at MSV Duisburg

Karweina played in the youth teams of TuS Reichshof, FV Wiehl and finally spent four years at 1. FC Köln. At the age of 19, the center forward moved from Cologne to Sportfreunde Lotte, where he gained his first experience in professional football.

After just one season, MSV Duisburg took notice of the fast striker and signed Karweina to a two-year contract. He played 36 competitive games (7 goals, 8 assists) for MSV in those two years, but the 5’8” man was unable to really establish himself during that time.

Karweina, who missed a total of twelve games due to injury, repeatedly shuttled between the starting line-up, the bench and the stands. The Gummersbach native only started ten times in 31 third division games for Duisburg. In 2021, he moved to Türkgücü Munich, but left the club in March after it filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations.

Austria Klagenfurt then signed the tricky striker in July 2022 – a good decision. In 53 games, he scored 16 goals and provided twelve assists. In Klagenfurt, Karweina’s market value quickly exceeded the million mark for the first time. In the summer of 2024, he then joined FC Luzern, where he has become even more valuable.
