“An incredible mentality!” – That’s the new quality of SG Wattenscheid 09

SG Wattenscheid 09 once again demonstrated its mentality, securing a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Gievenbeck. Coach Christopher Pache praised the team’s unbridled determination.

Top teams? SG Wattenscheid 09 can do that. Within five days, two teams from the top third of the Oberliga table, Westfalia Rhynern (2-1) and 1. FC Gievenbeck (1-1), were held to draws at Wattenscheid’s Berliner Straße.

This means that head coach Christopher Pache’s team is back on track just in time for next week’s long-awaited city derby against VfL Bochum II.

In two consecutive games, the former Bundesliga club demonstrated a new quality: comebacks. As against Rhynern, the Black and Whites were unlucky to fall behind against Gievenbeck. Christoph Rüther scored from the spot for the Münster side (40′).

“I think we got off to an incredibly good start with two top chances. We had a lot of the game, played well with the ball, and were aggressive on second balls. The penalty against us took us out of the game a bit,“ analyzed 09 coach Pache.

But once again, ”Nullneun” did not let itself be deterred, fought its way back into the game in the second half and equalized through Robert Nnaji (66th minute). The coach spoke of “fighting spirit” and an “amazing mentality” shown by his players in the team circle and praised them at the subsequent press conference: “We gathered ourselves and shook it off during the break. When we came back from the bench, we regained control of the game. After the 1-1, we had the momentum fully on our side and several chances to score.”

An open exchange of blows in the final third ended with a “deserved point,” according to Pache. The only thing that bothered the 36-year-old was the referee’s line. “The many whistles broke our rhythm a bit, which took us out of the game to some extent,” he said angrily. Pache did not hold back with his opinion on the sidelines and was shown a yellow-red card shortly before the final whistle for repeated complaining.

Gievenbeck’s streak continues

On the other side, the coaching team was also satisfied with the point gained in rainy Wattenscheid. “There was a phase after the 1-0 where we could have sealed the deal. It would have been very difficult for Wattenscheid to get back into the game. We knew that they would increase the pressure in the second half and that we couldn’t defend for 90 minutes,” summarized coach Torsten Maas. With the 1-1 draw, the Münster team is now unbeaten in seven championship games.

Gievenbeck can confirm the trend next week when they travel to ASC 09 Dortmund (November 23, 2:30 p.m.). Before that, however, they face a mammoth task in the Westphalia Cup match against third-division SC Verl (November 17, 2 p.m.). SG Wattenscheid, on the other hand, is eagerly awaiting the “game of the year” against VfL Bochum’s second team at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion (November 23, 1 p.m.).
