Nabil Bentaleb recently had to be admitted to hospital. Now it looks as if the former Schalke player will have to end his soccer career.
As reported by “RMC Sport”, former Schalke player Nabil Bentaleb will most likely have to end his career. The background to this is the “attack of weakness” reported by OSC Lille, due to which Bentaleb recently had to be admitted to hospital.
According to the broadcaster, however, it was actually a cardiac arrest. The use of a defibrillator and cardiac massage were necessary. Bentaleb was fitted with a pacemaker at the hospital. The Algerian’s contract at Lille runs until June 30, 2026, and it is more than uncertain whether he will be able to fulfill it.
Bentaleb played 107 games for FC Schalke 04 from 2016 to 2021, scoring 19 goals and providing nine assists. However, it never became a love affair. Bentaleb was suspended several times – for the first time in March 2019, when he failed to show up for a match without signing off. At the time, Bentaleb was injured and his heavily pregnant wife was in hospital.
“Everyone at the club knew that I was going through a difficult time, so I didn’t train all week and still played at the weekend. I would have preferred not to play because I wasn’t feeling well mentally. I was in hospital every day,” he explained the situation. “You can’t sleep at night, you don’t eat well and you’re stressed. You go to training and the hospital calls you because there’s a problem.” However, not sending a message to the club that day was “a mistake”, as Bentaleb admitted in retrospect.
Bentaleb was suspended again at the end of 2020 after he was late for a German course. The Algerian, who had moved to Gelsenkirchen from Tottenham Hotspur for €19 million in 2017, was again relegated to the second team. In the summer of 2021, the chapter between Schalke 04 and Nabil Bentaleb finally came to an end.
After six months without a club, Bentaleb moved on to Angers SCO. In the summer of 2023, Lille paid €4.5 million for the services of the now 29-year-old. In the past season, Bentaleb played 34 games for Lille and provided three assists
