Bayern champions for the fifth time, MSV and 1. FC Köln saved, Meppen relegated

The Bayern Munich women’s football team have won the German championship for the fifth time.

The leaders defeated relegated Turbine Potsdam 11:1 (7:0) on the final matchday and kept defending champions VfL Wolfsburg at bay by two points with their highest win of the season.

The DFB Cup winners also managed a 2-1 (2:1) win over Cup finalists SC Freiburg. With their fifth triumph after 1976, 2015, 2016 and 2021, the Munich women are directly qualified for the group stage of the Champions League.

Saki Kumagai (4th/52nd), Lea Schüller (12th/89th), an own goal by Anna Gerhardt (21st), Jovana Damjanovic (24th/30th), Georgia Stanway (32nd), captain Lina Magull (37th), Carolin Simon (49th) and Glodis Viggosdottir (75th) scored for coach Alexander Straus’ side in Munich.

“It’s been a year of hard work. You’re on the training pitch every day and you give everything to experience something like this, unbelievable. We enjoyed it, the whole game, the whole year. I’m incredibly proud of the team,” national player Klara Bühl told BR: “We’re looking forward to the balcony, I can’t wait. This will be a moment in life you never forget.”

The second team to be relegated after Potsdam is newcomer SV Meppen. The team from Emsland lost 0:6 (0:3) at Eintracht Frankfurt, 1. FC Köln and MSV Duisburg are thus saved.
