FC Bayern Munich has increased the pressure on Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen with a goal gala. The record soccer champions won their home match against FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday with 8:1 (3:1) after a strong performance and temporarily reduced the gap to the works club to seven points. Leverkusen face VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday (19:30/DAZN).
RB Leipzig also moved ahead and overtook Borussia Dortmund for a Champions League place with a 2:0 (1:0) win against bottom club SV Darmstadt 98. However, BVB can reclaim fourth place with a win in the away game against Werder Bremen on Saturday evening (18:30/Sky).
Despite leading twice, 1. FC Köln missed out on a much-needed win in the Rhineland derby 3:3 (1:1) at Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the middle of the table, FC Augsburg won 1:0 (1:0) against newly promoted 1. FC Heidenheim.
Bayern had taken a 2-0 lead with goals from Harry Kane (13th minute) and Leon Goretzka (19th minute). Ex-Leverkusen man Nadiem Amiri (31) only briefly gave Mainz hope, but Kane (45.+7) restored the two-goal lead before the half-time whistle. This was extended significantly in the second half by Thomas Müller (47′), Jamal Musiala (61′), returnee Serge Gnabry (66′) with a stroke of genius, Kane (70′) with his 30th goal of the season and Goretzka (90’+2).
An early own goal from Darmstadt’s Thomas Isherwood (3) put Leipzig on the road to victory. Christoph Baumgartner (50′) followed up in the second half.
In the explosive Rhine derby, Faride Alidou (7th/64th) twice gave Cologne the lead, which was equalized by Franck Honorat (32nd) and Robin Hack (71st). Just two minutes after equalizing, Hack, who had just come on as a substitute, made it 3-2, but Cologne hit back through Damion Downs (79′) to salvage a point.
