DSC Wanne-Eickel made a top start to the season in the Westfalenliga 2. After the 4:1 victory last weekend, they took the lead in the table.
DSC Wanne-Eickel are leading the Westfalenliga 2 table after two match days thanks to a top start to the new season. After already winning the opening duel against SC Obersprockhövel 2-1, head coach Sebastian Westerhoff’s team celebrated a 4-1 victory against Concordia Wiemelhausen last weekend. “The first half was relatively even. Wiemelhausen forced us into many duels that we didn’t want to have that way. Nevertheless, we deserved to lead 2:0. Then we completely dominated the second half. The team did almost 100 percent of what I wanted to see,” said the DSC coach, pleased with his team’s performance in their second match of the season. After the break, Wanne-Eickel increased their lead to 4-0 before Concordia Wiemelhausen scored the final goal.
Best start to the season in eleven years
“We haven’t had a start like this since I’ve been here,” said Westerhoff, pleased with his team’s form. And he’s right: to find a similarly good start, you have to go back a few years. Eleven years to be precise, because in the 11/12 season the team last took six points from the first two games.
Although the maximum points haul has been recorded so far, Westerhoff says there is still room for improvement. “I like the fact that we are playing as a team and that the automatisms are already taking hold. But we could still have a bit more control in the game and be less hectic in some situations,” the 36-year-old explains what will be worked on in the coming weeks.
In the next two weeks, DSC face DJK TuS Hordel (28 August, 3pm) and Oberliga relegated SC Westfalia Herne (4 September, 3:30pm). Westerhoff is looking forward to the upcoming games with great anticipation: “We now have two derbies in a row. Hordel didn’t get off to the best start, but they were second last season and have a good team together. And of course you can’t have more derbies than against Westfalia Herne.”
Westerhoff agrees that after two matchdays it is still too early to raise expectations: “My goals for the season haven’t changed yet. I think there will be a group of five or six teams playing at the top and we want to be there. And the more points we get at the start of the season, the more likely we are to succeed. “
