This is bitter news for Karlsruher SC: a key player has been ruled out of Saturday’s big game against Schalke 04.
The DFB Cup match between Karlsruher SC and Borussia Mönchengladbach was 83 minutes old when attacking midfielder Lilian Egloff had to receive treatment. One of KSC’s key players was unable to continue.
Coach Christian Eichner had a bad feeling immediately after the 1-3 defeat to Borussia. ” It would be really dramatic if he were to be out for a long time.” And Egloff will be out for a long time. The attacking midfielder has suffered a torn muscle fiber in the back of his left thigh and will be out for several weeks. Egloff will of course also be out for the big game against FC Schalke 04 next Saturday, November 1, at 1 p.m.
The 23-year-old has played in all ten second division games from the start, scoring four goals. With his absence, Eichner loses an important fixture in his offensive play.
Egloff was unable to make much of an impact in the DFB Cup against Borussia. Gladbach got off to a perfect start: Just moments after the kickoff, Shuto Machino scored to make it 1-0 (3rd minute). And after the break, there was another quick goal for the hosts, this time by Nico Elvedi (51st minute). Fabian Schleusener (59th minute) managed to pull one back, but Haris Tabakovic put the game to bed in the 89th minute with the final goal.
Although Karlsruhe needed around half an hour to find their feet after conceding an early goal against a powerful Borussia side, the visitors then had chances of their own: both Marvin Wanitzek (29th minute) and Egloff (41st minute) missed opportunities to equalize.
The game became more balanced in the second half, with the Baden team pushing for the equalizer, but the hosts had the best chances. KSC keeper Hans Christian Bernart made several brilliant saves to prevent the second division team from suffering a heavier defeat. In the end, however, they were knocked out of the cup in the second round. Last season, KSC had reached the round of 16. with dpa
