VfL Bochum will have to do without Moritz-Broni Kwarteng for the rest of the season. He was injured in a frustrating foul.
In the closing stages of the home game against RB Leipzig last weekend (1:4), VfL Bochum’s Moritz-Broni Kwarteng rudely knocked over opponent Lois Openda without any chance of getting the ball. He was shown the red card.
And the scene is doubly bitter for the 25-year-old, who moved to Castroper Straße from 1. FC Magdeburg last summer. As reported, Kwarteng was banned for three games by the DFB for the foul.
However, this is only a side note, as Kwarteng injured himself during the action. He was so seriously injured that he will miss VfL at least until the end of the current season. The attacking player suffered a partial rupture of the inner ligament in his knee, as examinations revealed.
“We are very sorry for him,” Bochum’s sporting director Marc Lettau was quoted as saying in a statement from the club. “Momo has invested a lot to become an important factor for our team. We will provide him with the best possible medical support so that he can attack again in the new season. “
Regardless of this, VfL did not accept the three-match ban for Kwarteng. The DFB sports court had deemed the attacker’s tackle to be a minor assault. The club did not share this view and therefore pleaded for a reduced penalty. As Kwarteng will miss the upcoming games anyway, Bochum decided not to appeal to the sports court.
For Kwarteng, the injury is another chapter in a mixed season so far. He initially missed parts of the preparation and the first few weeks of the season due to pubalgia. The Stuttgart-born player, who played a strong second division season with Magdeburg last year, was then unable to make a breakthrough in Thomas Letsch’s team.
Kwarteng mostly had to make do with the wild card role, remaining on the bench for the full 90 minutes in some games. He made 11 appearances, playing 267 minutes, and was twice part of the starting eleven. Now he has to cope with another setback
