Boris Schommers is tasked with leading Sportfreunde Siegen back to winning ways. The new coach has outlined his vision for the club.
Sportfreunde Siegen caused a sensation at the beginning of the week. After six games in a row without a win, coach Thorsten Nehrbauer, who had led Sportfreunde back to the Regionalliga West just a few months ago, had to leave.
Boris Schommers, former coach of MSV Duisburg, is taking over. He was officially introduced on Tuesday evening, October 28. The 46-year-old said his first impressions were very positive.
“I was most impressed by the development of the club. I’ve been to the Leimbachstadion a few times and have been following the last few months. You can feel the spirit of optimism and the development that has begun. I want to help drive this development forward in the near future—especially with regard to the integration of young players.”
Schommers is delighted to be taking over an intact team. Even though their confidence is naturally somewhat limited at the moment, Siegen have already shown what they are capable of this season. “It’s obviously great to start in our own living room, in front of this fantastic crowd at the Leimbachstadion. We need to show a different side on Sunday and want to make up for it in terms of results. It will be a hard-fought game, but we will be well prepared,” said Schommers, looking ahead to the upcoming opponent Fortuna Düsseldorf II.

How does he want to play? “Basically, I have a clear idea of how I want to play and a clear game plan. But I don’t have one system and I don’t presume to dictate a fixed system. That wouldn’t work because the squad is put together in a certain way. We’ll look together at what his idea is. In any case, we have an exciting mix of players who stand for the playful element. But of course, it takes a little time to implement the things we envision on the field. We’re not dying in beauty,” he said.
He continued: “I’m a coach who likes to find playful solutions and get into the final third with them. We’ve been very efficient in front of goal so far and have made good use of the few chances we’ve had. That’s one area we want to work on: creating more danger from open play. At the same time, we want to introduce one or two defensive elements to make it harder for us to concede avoidable goals. Wrong decisions are punished immediately in the Regionalliga.“
He also wants to actively involve the youth coaches in Siegen, if possible. ”I like to work individually and in groups—that’s necessary to make players better. With this additional manpower, we can drive development forward,” said Schommers.
