1. FC Düren spent the winter in a non-relegation spot. The reigning Mittelrheinliga champions want to occupy this position at the end of the 2022/2023 Regionalliga West season.
1 FC Düren started the season with 13 out of a possible 15 points. At that time, nobody thought that this promoted team would have anything to do with the relegation battle in the Regionalliga West.
But then only three points, one win, were to come from nine matches in a row. The consequence: promotion coach Giuseppe Brunetto had to vacate his coaching chair in Düren.
Former Bundesliga coach Boris Schommers, once responsible for 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, took over. Under the football coach, the Düren team was able to pick up four valuable points in the last weeks before the winter break in the fight to stay in the league and spend the winter in a non-relegation place.
Boris Schommers on…
… the first half of the season in the Regionalliga West: “Basically, it’s not easy for me to assess the season. I’ve only been with Düren for four games. But of course: The team started the season very, very well, but then reality caught up with us very quickly. In the first games under me, I saw that the team definitely has the chance to achieve its goals.”
…personnel changes in the winter break: “We have a small squad. We are in the planning stages here to turn two or three screws. We are working on solutions to be able to win one or the other player for Düren. But it’s never easy as a promoted team. Because financially our hands are tied.”
…the goals for 2022: “As a promoted team, it’s all about being above the line at the end of the season. Currently we’re three points away from that goal and that’s where we want to be at the end of the season.”
..the preparation: “We will start again on 2 January 2023 in Düren. We’ll stay in Düren and won’t fly to a training camp. “
