Boy from Essen impresses – and remains unbeaten against RWE

Tom Baack was one of the best players on the pitch in Verl’s 3-1 win in Essen. The Essen native extended his strong record against RWE.

The 3-1 win at Rot-Weiss Essen saw SC Verl climb into a non-relegation spot. On this Wednesday evening, the sports club was simply the better team. Verl had a lot of possession from the start, and in the second half, the team of head coach Alexander Ende then made good use of the majority and scored three goals.

One of the best players on the pitch was Tom Baack (kicker magazine rating: 2.5). The 25-year-old was assured on the ball, extremely hard-running and exuded a lot of joy for the game. Thanks to Baack, the SCV was able to make the Essen team run with short, fast passes in the 4-2-2-2 system, even in the one-on-one situations. What was still missing in this phase was precision and determination in the final third. That improved in the second half against ten Red & Whites.

Back to Baack: it was a special game for the SC Verl midfield engine, who has two scorer points (one goal, one assist) from ten appearances so far and has played the full 90 minutes eight times. After all, he is a boy from Essen. Baack was born in Essen in 1999, and in his youth he played for SV Leithe before lacing up his boots for VfL Bochum for a total of 13 years.

He even captained the VfL U19s. As a reward, the 41-time German junior international was offered a professional contract in 2016. But the big breakthrough eluded him in Bochum as a 19-year-old, with just four brief appearances in the second division.

Baack is a key player in Verl – and still unbeaten against RWE

Tom Baack has been playing for SC Verl since 2021 and has played 107 third division games in that time. He seems to particularly enjoy playing against the biggest club in his hometown. That’s because Baack is still undefeated in direct duels against Rot-Weiss Essen. His record: four games, two wins, two draws, 10:3 goals. The 25-year-old still has a contract with the club until the end of the season.
