There are many topics at Borussia Dortmund despite the World Cup break. In a Sky interview, BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke talks about winter transfer plans and the future of a trio.
Despite the mixed first half of the season in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund is probably not planning any big jumps when the transfer market starts in January.
“We are still in analysis mode, plus the transfer window is far from open. So basically I don’t see that happening,” said BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke in a Sky interview. At the same time, the 63-year-old said, the Revierklub would have to see how the next few weeks went. He is currently on a trip to Asia with the team.
The personnel cover in Dortmund’s attack is thin. With World Cup participant and youngster Youssoufa Moukoko, only one centre forward is currently fit. Sebastian Haller has to undergo a second operation after suffering from cancer. Anthony Modeste, who was signed as a replacement, is also injured and fell short of expectations in the first half of the season. In addition, Marco Reus and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are out of action and Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi are not in good form.
But Watzke says: “A lot can happen in football, but actually we have enough offensive players because Bynoe-Gittens is coming back, Marco Reus is coming back. Then we already have our options.” Earlier, sporting director Sebastian Kehl had said that reinforcements in the winter were “not our plan”.
There had been some criticism of Kehl and also of coach Edin Terzic due to the fluctuating performances in the first half of the season. At the annual general meeting at the weekend, club boss Watzke clearly expressed his confidence in the duo. That was not really necessary, Watzke now explained on Sky.
BVB: Watzke explains appeal for Terzic and Kehl
He had wanted to explain to people “that we’ve also had a shake-up at sporting management level, Michael Zorc has quit after 24 years, Sebastian Kehl is now fully and solely in charge.”
And with the appointment of the self-confessed BVB fan Terzic as head coach in the summer, Borussia decided “in full awareness that we are now also striving for a long-term solution with people who are completely and utterly committed to BVB”.
So while the club is planning firmly with the two people in charge, some players are heading for an uncertain future. Eight contracts expire at the end of the season, including those of captain Marco Reus and head of defence Mats Hummels. “We have also already declined this two thousand times. We will talk to each other in 2023. With both of them,” said Watzke, who did not yet reveal any tendencies. “And then we’ll see. “
Bellingham future: BVB boss Watzke annoyed
But it is not only the future of the two veterans that is occupying the club’s environment. Jude Bellingham is at least as hotly debated. With his outstanding performances, the 19-year-old Englishman is increasingly coming into focus.
The World Cup player’s contract runs until 2025, yet Bellingham is repeatedly rumoured to be in contact with top English clubs and Real Madrid. Will BVB still be able to keep him? “I don’t feel like asking these questions anymore,” Watzke replied, annoyed. “I already think that everything has been said about every question on this subject. “
