This defeat probably hurts even more than the one in Munich. Because this chance of winning the title is now gone. BVB disappointed all along the line in Leipzig. And coach Edin Terzic doesn’t beat around the bush.
With the exception of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Dortmund’s football coach Edin Terzic has practically attested to the collective failure of his team in the cup defeat against RB Leipzig. The 40-year-old coach was unsparing in his analysis of BVB’s performance in the 0:2 quarter-final defeat and also admitted that things had become “a bit louder” during the half-time break.
“We were surprised on the offensive that there were duels when we got the ball. Defensively, we had way too much spacing,” Terzic said late on Wednesday night. It was not that this affected only one player, but all of them “except Gregor, we have to take him out of there”.
Otherwise, the BVB players had collectively played a disastrous first half. “You just can’t play like that in a DFB Cup quarter-final if you want to win the DFB Cup,” stressed Terzic, for whom the exit was also his first defeat in the DFB Cup as a coach.
Terzic described as speculative any suggestions that the 4-2 defeat in last Saturday’s top match in the Bundesliga against FC Bayern and the drop to second place in the table still had an effect. On Sunday, Monday and also in training on Tuesday, the defeat against Bayern was not felt.
Now, however, they were “extremely disappointed”, “really pissed off” and “pissed off, it was just a shit evening”, said the BVB coach. But he had already said weeks ago, when his team was said to be on a fantastic run, “We’re maybe not quite as good as you made us out to be at that stage.”
The reckoning will come at the end of the season, he said. “Now it’s about letting it sink in, processing it, shaking it off. It’s going to be hard to put a check mark on it. We were eliminated from a competition we wanted to win. We missed a chance to win the title,” said Terzic, who will welcome 1. FC Union Berlin, who were also eliminated from the cup, to Dortmund on Saturday for the chasing duel between second and third in the table.
