On Saturday (3:30 p.m.), BVB will take on Union Berlin in the chasing duel in the Bundesliga. There will be fan protests at the match. Here’s why.
On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund can get its cup frustration off its chest and increase the pressure on league leader Bayern Munich again with a win against Union Berlin. At the same time, they would keep the Köpenicker, who are currently third in the table, at bay.
However, there will be protests from BVB fans at the game. Everyone involved can be prepared for that. However, they have nothing to do with the poor performances of the black-and-yellow team in the top match at Bayern Munich (2:4) and in the DFB Cup quarterfinals at RB Leipzig (0:2).
The Südtribüne alliance has called for a protest against the possibility of an investor entering the DFL. “Hello Borussians, as you may have already noticed in recent weeks, the DFL is planning to generate additional billions through the entry of an investor,” the alliance writes on its homepage. “At the last home game against 1. FC Cologne, we have already tried to inform you about this with the help of a flyer. Schwatzgelb.de has also compiled all available information with the article: “Investor entry in the DFL: the new spectre in the cabinet of horrors of modern soccer. “
BVB fans want to defend themselves against this: “We are of the opinion that a decision could soon be made at the DFL with the opening up to investors that has the explosive power to change German soccer permanently and once and for all – and in doing so, probably once again not for the better from the point of view of us soccer fans.”
“Do we want to stand by and watch soccer become turbo-commercialized?”
For this reason, he said, the club does not want to stand idly by and watch professional soccer in Germany continue to lose itself and its connection to the people. “Do we want to watch soccer become turbo-commercialized and even more alienated from society? Do we want to deny our children and grandchildren the opportunity to experience a visit to the stadium on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the Westfalenstadion?” writes the alliance of the active Dortmund fan scene, founded in 2014.
Especially in Dortmund, they say, they know too well since the near-bankruptcy in 2005 that a business model built on sand and a bet on revenue in the future is not the last word in wisdom. “We therefore call to the upcoming home game against Union Berlin (08.04.2023) every single Borussian and every fan club – no matter whether on the south or on one of the other stands – to: Inform yourselves about this topic and express on Saturday your displeasure about the planned investor entry.”
There will probably therefore also be some banners in the stadium. “Feel free to prepare signs or banners, which can range from a very simple “No to investors in the DFL!” to creative solutions. There are no limits to your creativity.” The action is to take place at the beginning of the second half.
