Borussia Dortmund II and FC Gütersloh are treading water in the Regionalliga West.
A week after coach Daniel Rios declared Borussia Dortmund II’s promotion hopes over following a 2-1 defeat to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, his team could only manage a draw (1-1) at FC Gütersloh. The gap to the top threatens to grow even further for both teams. FCG got off to a better start, forcing Silas Ostrzinski into a brilliant save after a deflected shot (11′). But BVB soon got into the game: A free kick from the visitors hit the crossbar (15th minute), before Arne Wessels missed a huge chance to score (24th minute). The home side responded with a good double chance: Jannik Borgmann’s header was saved, and Erik Lanfer then hit the side netting from 12 meters out.
FC Gütersloh: Peters – Arkenberg (86. Rolf), Borgmann, Winke, Kandic, Lanfer, Liehr, Reyes (72. Korte), Twardzik, Wilkesmann, Maiella (77. John)
Borussia Dortmund II: Ostrzinski – Benkara, Kabar, Azhil, Eberwein, Feddersen (85. Mansaray), Krevsun, Reitz (70. Boyamba), Albert, Drakas (77. Diallo), Wessels (71. Mutove)
Goals: 1-0 Kandic (67.), 1-1 Boyamba (80.)
Yellow cards: Wilkesmann – Reitz, Azhil, Wessels, Kabar
Attendance: 2,528
Gütersloh continued to be the more active team after the break. This was also thanks to a mistake by Dortmund: Ostrzinski picked up a back pass with his hand – indirect free kick in the penalty area (48.) – The home side opted for power and failed to get past a defender’s leg (50.).
Once again, it took the visitors a few minutes to get into their stride. And suddenly there was a big chance: after a corner, there was suddenly a penalty (55′). Jarno Stark quickly decided on a corner and saved! (56′). BVB were punished twice. Just ten minutes later, Aleksandar Kandic made it 1-0 (67′). But the lead would not last long. After a flurry of substitutions, Dortmund’s substitute Joseph Boyamba took a shot from the edge of the penalty area. The ball flew longer and longer and finally landed in the goal off the inside post to make it 1-1 (80′). There were no more notable chances after that, and the game ended in a draw, which really helps neither team.
FC Gütersloh will face FC Schalke 04’s reserve team next weekend (Saturday, 2 p.m.), while BVB will continue with a home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf II (Friday, 7:30 p.m.).
