BVB II frustrates Cologne and makes the top of the table even more exciting – “In the end, we lack courage”

Borussia Dortmund’s second team has made the Regionalliga West even more exciting with a 2-2 draw at Fortuna Cologne.

The 2-2 draw between league leaders Fortuna Cologne and the reserves of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund means that half the league can once again dream of the title and the associated promotion to the 3rd division.

Just six points separate leaders Fortuna Cologne from ninth-placed BVB II. Wuppertaler SV, in 13th place, is also “only” nine points behind the leaders. BVB II could even have won, perhaps should have won, and it would have made the table even more exciting. It was only in a dramatic final phase that Fortuna Cologne once again posed a threat. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Fortuna actually managed to equalize: Enzo Wirtz flicked on a long ball into the path of Timo Bornemann, who scored with a delicate finish to make it 2-2 – just before the final whistle sounded. “We got off to a good start. It was evenly balanced at first, with chances at both ends. Then we had a strong spell in which we scored the 1-0 and also the 2-0. After that, Fortuna got into the game better, we sat deeper and defended well until halftime. In the second half, we actually wanted to play higher up the pitch, but we knew that Fortuna would put a lot of pressure on us. The goal came after a throw-in because we didn’t react quickly enough. After that, we had to defend a lot, the boys threw themselves into it and were determined to hold on to the win. In the end, we lacked the courage to stay calm with the ball – but we’ll take the point,” said Daniel Rios, coach of Dortmund’s second team.
